  • Insight #9: Make the most of your web site
  • "If your advertising goes unnoticed, everything else is academic!" William Bernbach, American Advertising Executive

A survey by Interland (a major Web hosting company) revealed that 77% of the small businesses surveyed said their web sites made their businesses healthier, 55% said that having a web site helped their companies weather the economic downturn, and 81% reported that their web sites generate leads for their business.

Nearly every business should have a web site. Today, even small businesses require web sites just to stay in the game.

Think about it: When you need a product or service, where is one of the first places you look? If you are like most consumers, you jump on the Internet.

Of course, not all web sites are created equal. Following are some tips to help ensure that your company is getting the most out its web site.

    1. Create web site content that effectively promotes your business

  • Focus your web site on your business goals and use your web site to actively promote your products and services.
  • Always post information such as hours, location, contact information, and a description of your products and services
  • Increase your credibility by including customer testimonials and key employee profiles.
  • Keep your site content up to date and fresh.
  • 2. Make your web site easy to use

  • Use a clean web design, with a minimum of graphics and flash introductions. This will speed web site loading.

  • Keep your navigation simple. Make important information easy to access by keeping it no more than three clicks from the home page.

  • Make it easy for prospects and customers to contact you by including your phone number and email address at the bottom of every page. Create a separate "contact us" page.

  • Place important information at the top of a web page so it can be viewed without scrolling down.

  • If your web site is not ready, say nothing rather than use 'under construction' or 'coming in 2005.'

  • Provide downloads from your web site to give customers quick access to your brochures and white papers.
